In the past few days, Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Hoffman successfully blocked early release for three (3) violent offenders currently in prison. Named in yesterday’s Release:
Michael Bruno (DOB 1/22/1977) – In 2000, Bruno was convicted of Murder, a felony, and Criminal Recklessness Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a Class C Felony. On November 14, 2025, Bruno filed a Motion for Modification of Sentence. On January 16, 2026, Prosecutor Hoffman filed an Objection. On January 20, 2026, the Honorable Douglas K. Mawhorr, Judge of the Delaware Circuit Court No. 3 denied the Motion for Modification of Sentence.
Artie Thomas (DOB 6/16/1973) – In 2000, Thomas, one of Michael Bruno’s co-defendants, was convicted of Murder, a felony, and Criminal Recklessness Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a Class C Felony. On January 6, 2026, Thomas filed a Motion for a Progress Report for the purpose of potentially filing a motion for modification of sentence. On, January 6, 2026, Prosecutor Hoffman filed an Objection. On January 21, 2026, the Honorable Douglas K. Mawhorr, Judge of the Delaware Circuit Court No. 3 denied the Motion for Progress Report.
Stanley Wills (DOB 6/16/1979) – In 2012, Wills was convicted of Armed Robbery, a Class B Felony, Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery, a Class B Felony, Theft, a Class C Felony, and Criminal Confinement, a Class B Felony. The jury also found Wills to be an habitual offender given the fact that he had accumulated at least two (2) prior unrelated felony convictions. On December 23, 2025, Wills filed a Petition for Modification of Sentence. On December 29, 2025, Prosecutor Hoffman filed an objection. On January 5, 2026, the Honorable Douglas K. Mawhorr, Judge of the Delaware Circuit Court No. 3 denied the Petition for Modification of Sentence.
Under Indiana law, people convicted of violent felonies must obtain the consent of the Prosecuting Attorney to obtain a sentence modification (sentence reduction). In all three of the above referenced cases, Prosecuting Attorney Hoffman refused to give consent to petition the court for a modification of sentence.
Prosecuting Attorney Eric Hoffman has said in part that “as long as I am Prosecutor in Delaware County, I will not consent to a reduction of a violent criminal’s sentence. Violent offenders must serve every minute of their sentence. The mere passage of time does not erase the pain and suffering inflicted at the hands of violent criminals. Nor does it lessen the risk that the offender will commit yet another violent crime victimizing yet another human being.”
Madison County has been awarded $3.1 million in grant money through the federal Safe Streets program. The Herald Bulletin says money from the five-year grant will be used in part to study intersections, signage and curves in county roads.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday DNA tests confirmed the body found in a burning vehicle last month in Delaware County was that of 58-year-old Michael D. Greer of Shelbyville. The Star Press previously identified the man through his father on Jan. 6.
“The State of Education in the 2026 Indiana Legislative Session” meeting will be held Sunday at 10 a.m. at Motivate Our Minds Learning Center on Highland Avenue in Muncie. The Star Press says Indiana Coalition for Public Education attorney and lobbyist Joel D. Hand will be the featured speaker. The event is free and open to the public.
An Anderson woman has been arrested on suspicion of domestic battery. The Herald Bulletin says 43-year-old Jerhonda Calhoun is accused of stabbing 40-year-old Lorenzo Croswell with a steak knife during a domestic dispute Saturday. Calhoun was convicted last year in Madison County on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
